[For example: a printing company needs a regular stock of ink cartridges, which it uses on a daily basis. It needs a fixed amount of cartridges to run its business safely - a tailor made application is built to keep count of the number of cartridges in stock - every time an employee removes a cartridge from the stock, he scans a bar code on the cartridge, which then tells the application to deduct one cartridge from the cupboard stock inventory. Once a given number of cartridges has been removed from stock and that the level reaches a critical level; the information is then passed to a web interface which automatically emails the ink provider stating that business X requires 10 new model Y cartridges to be delivered and charged to their account.]

This simple stock taking exercise is only a basic example of how the internet can be used in ways other than simple business representation.
