More commonly known as a CMS (content
Management system), these tools allow users to maintain web site content up to date have
also been called other names - at 6 ft high we decided to stick
with its more popular appellation.
CMS tools can be tagged onto any web site to achieve an array of maintenance
procedures; from simple textual changes to full blown site section alterations;
structural or aesthetic. CMS tools have been found to be very useful and namely
a simple way of avoiding what are known in the industry as expensive and not very cost effective
maintenance contracts.
The one off cost of adding a CMS to your site should
be equated with the cost you might incur for repeatedly updating your web
site via an agency. If a site requires regular maintenance, a CMS tool will undoubtedly be
advantageous.

[An example of what can be achieved with a CMS: if you need a christmas header
to appear on your web pages for a chosen period; this could be achieved by simply
checking a box in the CMS to activate or de-activate the appearance the site
header during the planned period - again there could be several banners for
selected periods throughout the year, which in effect could be expensive site
modifications if contracted as individual bits of work.]

A CMS will allow a user to achieve complex structural changes, such as adding
or removing active menu or navigational items (i.e. entire site sections). A
site owner may want to change the entire text of a page down to the text size
and colour, alter images, remove others or upload entirely new pictures; the
same could apply to sound files or even media streams such as video footage
or flash items or animated banners - i.e. new product advertising.
Most design elements need to be prepared prior to providing major aesthetic
site modifications in the CMS; but with time, because PHP programming is constantly
evolving, one finds that the limitations of having to prepare lots of graphical
content are reducing. Many aspects of image alteration and graphical content
creation can now be achieved using a CMS with built in advanced PHP commands.
PHP resizes and crops photos in a gallery - and you only need to upload any
large format JPEG image you have at hand - it will also add borders or decorations
for you if necessary. But so much more can be achieved!
